To get a feel for the type of support it provides, we called and emailed the company numerous times, posing as a new business owner. While we did have to wait on hold to speak with someone during one of our calls, all of the other times we reached out to Gusto, our calls were answered immediately. During our conversations, the representatives gave clear and detailed answers to all of our questions. At the end of each call, we had a strong understanding of how the system works, the services it provides and how much it all costs. At no time did any of the representatives try to push us to sign up for the service. Some of the other payroll providers we spoke to quickly tried to get all of the specifics on our company and quote us prices. Gusto, however, seemed focused on first making sure our needs were met.We were also happy with the prompt response we received when we contacted the company via email. Our emails were all returned within a couple of hours and included detailed and helpful answers to our questions.Gusto representatives are available for support by phone and email between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. (MST), Monday through Friday. Gusto also has a complete library of resources on its website, including a full list of articles, videos and webinars, with tips on not only using the payroll system, but also running a small business.LimitationsOne disappointment we had with Gusto is that the company isnt an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau and has a D- rating. However, as of Septembe r 2018, the company had only 11 complaints filed against it in the past three years.Another downside could be the cost. Gusto welches once one of the cheapest payroll companies, but that is no longer the case. It went through a several-year stretch in which it regularly increased prices. However, since the company moved to its three-tiered service plan, costs have remained flat. If you need a more affordable payroll service, we would encourage you to consider Wagepoint, our runner-up in this category. Note, however, that Wagepoint charges per pay run, so if you run multiple payrolls each month, the costs of Gusto and Wagepoint will likely be pretty similar. You can read more about Wagepoint below.Runner-Up WagepointHere are a few reasons to consider our runner-up for this award,Wagepoint.Payroll servicesYou can use Wagepoints cloud-based system to pay hourly and salaried employees, as well as contract workers, by direct deposit or check. It allows you to easily add bonuses, commissi ons, expenses, holiday pay and overtime to any employee paycheck. You can also make any type of deduction you need, such as for 401(k) plans or healthcare benefits.Payroll taxWagepoint takes care of all your payroll tax responsibilities. That includes calculating, filing, and paying all federal, state, and local taxes for you. At the end of the year, Wagepoint automatically fills out all W-2 and 1099 forms and submits them to the IRS on your behalf.Employee self-serviceAll your workers and contractors can access the system to view their current and past paystubs, as well as to view and print year-end tax forms.CostWagepoint charges a base fee of $20 per payroll, plus $2 per employee for biweekly or semimonthly pay schedules. There is only a $10 base fee for making weekly payments. Being charged per pay run might be a negative for employers who want to run payroll multiple times a month, but it could be an advantage for businesses that have larger 1099 workforces and make payments on ly once a month.Better Business BureauWagepoint is an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau and has an A+ rating. As of September 2018, no complaints had been filed against the company within the past three years.Ready to choose a payroll service?
